Dom Virgil Michel (1890-1938) was a Benedictine of the Midwest, U.S.A, who, under the pressure of “being on time”, was deeply aware that Catholic spirit had to express itself in everyday living if it were to be truly authentic. Virgil Michel faces the « New Age » with an apologetics for a renewed Catholic sacramental theology. While listening to him in his pre-Vatican II setting, this work enjoys the further advantage of observing the tenets of the Catholic faith within theological developments and philosophical currents of the final years of the Second Millennium. Virgil Michel’s theology of Baptism and Confirmation presented both the intimate personal experience of supernatural life, but also the ecclesial experience of it, in the attempt of restoring vitality to Catholic worship.

Rose B. Calabretta was born in New York, U.S.A. Missionary of Christ Crucified, she has studied as resident scholar and worked as social volunteer in Latin America, India and Pakistan. 1981 saw her first doctorate, in sociology, at Fordham University, Bronx, New York, where she taught for several years. In 1998 she obtained the doctorate in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

This study focuses on the historical critical method as accepted and used according to the principles of Catholic biblical interpretation. The necessity and limits of the method are discussed as they were understood in four periods of Christian history. The sources for the study include selected literature of the early church, and the various ecclesial documents on biblical studies issued since 1893. special attention is given to the «crisis» in biblical interpretation identified in scholarly writings between 1983-1993, the Pontifical Biblical Commission’s response in The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church, and the discussion following its publication. This study also deals with the terminology of the historical-critical method and of the senses of Scripture.

This thesis studies the background to the pastoral renewal of revelation theology represented in the first chapter of the Constitution Dei Verbum. The background to this renewal can be found in the development of, and responses to, the fourth chapter of the preparatory schema De deposito Fidei which dealt specifically with the question of revelation and faith. The debate surrounding this chapter in the two years preceding the Council witnessed an encounter between the manualist tradition and contemporary theological insights into the theology of revelation. As this study shows, it was out of this early encounter that the Council’s hopes for a pastoral renewal of revelation theology developed.

Brendan J. Cahill,1963, is a priest of the diocese of Galveston-Houston, in Texas. He attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston and was ordained in 1990. He studied at the IBCS – Xavier University in New Orleans, where he received a Masters in Theology in 1994. he has also studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University where he received a Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology in 1996, and a Doctorate in Fundamental Theology in 1999.

This book is an edited work of the doctoral thesis, which considers Jesus’ first appearance and activity in Galilee in relation to Mark’s Gospel. It is its central affirmation that Mk 1, 21-28 has a programmatic character for the Gospel of Mark, because the themes/motives present in it are found throughout the ministry of Jesus, and are both repetitive and verifiable in the Gospel. Its placement at the beginning of the account of Jesus’ ministry introduces the reader to what is going to happen in the story of Jesus’ public activity, and affects the reader’s understanding of the entire Gospel narrative. This thesis for the first time has proved in a detailed and systematic way that this pericope has a programmatic character for Mark’s Gospel.

John Ghijioke Iwe, ordained priest for Okigwe Diocese (Nigeria) in 1982, studied Philosophy and Theology in Bigard Memorial Major Seminary, Ikot Ekpene and Enugu respectively. He also furthered his studies in Scripture at Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome and did his doctorate at Pontifical Gregorian University. The author, among other pastoral activities, has also taught in Seat of Wisdom Major seminary, Owerri, Nigeria, and Regina Mundi Pontifical Institute, Rome.
