This work relies on the history of exegesis that for Romans is more or less stagnant, despite indisputable progress on the question of the connection between Paul and Judaism. But independent of circumstances, this work is the result of a slow process of sedimentation: research, teaching, and numerous contacts have convinced me of the usefulness of a publication.  Taking the initial steps alerted me to the difficulty of undertaking a truly theological exegesis.  There is a twofold tendency: to go no further than the exact meaning of the text, following diverse approaches—linguistic, historic, semiotic, post-structuralist, and others—to the point of becoming bogged down and making it purely a mind game, or on the contrary, wanting to rush through the steps to get directly to the theological ideas without going through the necessary procedures to cover the material and thereby profit from the work.  Commentaries may be partly responsible for these difficulties: literary approaches and theological analyses come close to each other without their connection appearing, as if it were only necessary to present the patterns in order to obey the laws of the genre.  May this work show how relevant it is to pay attention to the literal meaning of a text.

The present volume presents important and useful information to students doing exegetical research in Sacred Scripture. The Guide is arranged in six chapters, which endeavor to respond to students’ questions regarding: the primary sources of the biblical text (chapter one), a survey of available biblical bibliographical research tools (chapter two), a panorama of reference works, such as concordances, synopses, lexicons, grammars, etc., and an essential bibliography on exegetical methods (chapter three). Particular attention is given to the literary types occurring in the Bible (chapter four), followed by some suggestions in organizing the writing of an exegetical study (chapter five). Finally, some practical rules are provided on how to make accurate bibliographic citations in footnotes and in a bibliography (chapter six).

Stanislaw Bazylinski, O.F.M.Conv., born in Poland, 1962, received his S.S.D. from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Each Gospel writer has his own way of introducing the public life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Each Evangelist wants his reader to understand the public, contested life of Jesus in a certain, precise way: he does this by the statements or stories which anticipate the Gospel and direct the reader’s thoughts. The reader is expected to take these introductory ideas with him throughout the Gospel, to use these ideas as guides in how to interpret the public life of Jesus. This book studies these Introductions so as to bring out what each Evangelist wants his reader to accompany him throughout his reading about the adult life of Jesus.

John Kilgallen, S.J, from Chicago, Illinois and a member of the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus, is professor emeritus at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, where he has taught since 1988. He has a doctoral degree in Sacred Scripture (SSD) from the Biblical Institute, as well as a master’s degree (MA Classics) from Loyola University Chicago.

Twenty Parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke

This book hopes to bring out the teachings of Jesus’ parables, with particular attention paid to the immediate contexts in which Luke puts his parables. These contexts, sometimes only just a sentence and sometimes originating from Jesus as well as from Luke, give the reader an essential guide to the sense of the parables. The nature of a parable, or “comparison”, is, by general agreement of exegetes, very often open to more than one interpretation. It is in this sizing up the inner possibilities of the parables to have them speak winningly to their audiences, together with the freedom belonging to an author and his desire to remain faithful to the mind of Jesus, that the author strives to interpret Luke’s presentation of a large number of Jesus’ parables.
